YardSmartMarin is a collaborative, community-driven project empowering people who live and work in Marin to reduce / eliminate pesticide use in the home and work environment through awareness and education about safer, effective alternatives.
Our long-term goal is to create a sustainable organization that provides easily accessible, multi-lingual information about safer alternatives to pesticide use in the home and work environment.
Who are we?
YardSmartMarin is a project under the fiscal sponsorship of MarinLink. Initiated in 2016 as County of Marin-funded community coalition, we are moving towards becoming a stand-alone, sustainable non-profit organization.
We began as a public-private outreach and education campaign utilizing existing County and community-based networks and expertise. A coalition was formed that included members of the public who represent specific sectors and perspectives: retailers, landscape managers, environmental experts, Integrated Pest Management experts, property owners, pest control operators, public health and animal health experts, Master Gardeners, youth, bee experts and other community and sector representatives from around Marin.
YardSmartMarin operates under MarinLink’s nonprofit 501(c)3 organization, allowing us the development time to launch our strategic plan and attract tax-exempt contributions necessary for our success and longevity.
Our current partner organizations include Marin County Parks and MCSTOPP, Our Water, Our World, Wildcare and more.
Who is funding this project?
The Marin County Board of Supervisors, responding to the community’s expressed interest and recognizing the environmental and public health benefits of dramatically reducing the use of pesticides in the landscaped environment, committed $140,000 in funding for a two-year public education and outreach campaign. The San Francisco Estuary Partnership, as part of the EPA-funded SF Bay Water Quality Improvement Fund grant program, provided an additional $90,040 contract for campaign development support. YardSmartMarin is now focused on raising funds through grants, events and donations.
