An Easy New Tool to Help ID Animal Pests

Have something creating holes in your garden soil, or eating your oranges? But don’t see any obvious pests? The new tool from the University of California, Wildlife Pest Identification Tool, may help you find an answer.

This online tool will help you narrow down potential vertebrate pests using signs of the critter.  Using a photo format, click on images of typical damage from the pest, their tracks, and their droppings (scat), then on “potential pests.” The results will link to photos of the possible pest with links to more information including management options.  It includes a wide range of animals from rats, mice, gophers, and moles, to rabbits, deer, and birds.

Pest identification is an important first step in managing animal pest problems.  Give this online tool a try!
