More Choices with Bare Root Plants

In the mood to add some plants to the garden? One highlight of the winter nursery is the availability of bare root plants.  Bare root plants are not actively growing plants. They’re usually dug when they’re dormant and then refrigerated until it is time to ship to the nursery or you. This system works well for many trees, shrubs, vines, and other perennials. Bare root plants weigh less and are easier for the seller to ship. Once you place the plant in the ground or in potting soil and add moisture, the plant will start to grow again.

In addition to being less expensive, there are MANY MORE plant choices.  It’s truly the BEST time to select varieties of roses, fruit trees, vines, and many perennial fruits and vegetables, like strawberries, raspberries, artichoke, and asparagus.  You’ll often be able to find varieties that do well in your own microclimate, and that are noted for resistance to specific pests and diseases.  Making careful choices now will help you prevent future problems.

Here’s information on basics of planting and specific tips for planting bare root.
